Topeliuksen Koulu

Topeliuksen koulu is a school of 530 students (classes from 1st to 9th grade).
The school is specialised in language teaching and in the secondary school level the students can also study French speaking CLIL-classes. There are in total around 50 teachers working in the school. The objective of primary and lower secondary education in Finland is to support pupils’ growth towards humanity and ethically responsible membership of society and to provide them with the knowledge and skills needed in life. The aim of differentiation of instruction is to promote each pupil’s learning and wellbeing. This may happen by allocating individual learning objectives, individual homework and tasks, different materials to suit individual needs, the use of different amounts of independent work and teachers help, or the use of small groups. If differentiation is not a sufficient means to meet the needs of an individual pupil, teachers may ask for extra support for the pupil.

Our comprehensive school works with students from 7 to 16 years old. Around 30% of our students are foreigners and we also have French speaking CLIL class students so the school is quite multilingual. For this reason language awareness and teaching methods are at the core of our schools best practices.
